The Curse of Chalion, by Lois McMaster Bujold

Wow - while a fan of Bujold can easily see echoes of Miles and his kin in this book - it is (yet again) an astounding work of art. Honor treachery and more compete in a magical world. Her invented theology (Quintarian!) is a clever device and gives her opportunity to reflect on some rather deep thoughts. All the while carrying forward a great story of romance and adventure.

This has put me in a mood for more Bujold.. off to Shards of Honor.
