Leaping to the Stars by David Gerrold.

Number three in the excellent series about Charles Dingillian and his family as they escape an Earth that is collapsing under a host of problems, plagues and wars. Gerrold has truly taken the mantle of Heinlein - clever speculation about technology, interesting and spunky characters, wise old men (and women) spelling things out for the young - with good action and great pacing it makes a fun read.

I admit I don't share the philosophy behind the story at all points (nor did I with Heinliein) - but they (Heinlein and Gerrold) are on some level giving us anti-religious propaganda, so it isn't surprising there is no good religious person to counter the "revelationists". Maybe... just maybe that will show up in the next book (or books? hope so. He's yet to get to their colony, or meet the inevitable aliens).
